SIXX: A.M. Guitarist: Writing 'The Heroin Diaries' Songs Was Like Scoring A Movie

November 15, 2007

Amber Tomlinson of the Herald Journal reports: Most people's first response when looking at DJ Ashba (SIXX: A.M., ex-BEAUTIFUL CREATURES guitarist) is not thinking he is from Indiana.

Ashba, who is covered in tattooos, wears rock star garb and sports numerous piercings, could be stereotyped as the average Hollywood rock star. The thing most people don't know is that Ashba spent many summers enjoying the quiet life of Indiana.

Born in Monticello, Ashba spent the summers living like any Hoosier child would — spending time at Indiana Beach, detasseling, making friends and dreaming of a bigger life.

"I remember having a lot of fun," said Ashba, 34. "Most of the memories I have are about when I went to Indiana Beach. I had all the games down and I loved the haunted house ride. There were always bands playing the clubs and I remember watching them for hours. I tried to join one of the bands. I was really bad, but they didn't care."

Thinking about Ashba living a simple life is not easy. He is an award-winning guitar player who has rocked out at Ozzfest, opened for KISS and rocked with MARILYN MANSON. He has teamed with MÖTLEY CRÜE's Nikki Sixx to open a recording facility called Funny Farm Studios and his latest endeavor is writing, producing and performing "The Heroin Diaries" soundtrack with Sixx and James Michael. While making the soundtrack the trio formed the band SIXX: A.M.

"I read 'The Heroin Diaries' and was blown away," said Ashba, who is not only business partners with Sixx, but also very good friends. "I didn't know that side of Nikki; it was so different from the guy in that book. He had this whole movie in his head about the book. He painted such a good picture mentally that writing the songs were like scoring a movie."
